The renovated Basebox and new Patrol/Ski School building are open for business!

After eight busy months of construction, the two largest projects funded by the campaign are now essentially complete. Despite a delayed start due to the pandemic, the projects were completed on time and on budget. We won't be able to celebrate these accomplishments in the usual fashion, and we'll have to wait a while before they can be utilized to their full capacity. But there is no doubt that these projects will provide tremendous value to the cooperative for many years to come.

The new Basebox addition houses an elevator as well as an additional stairway to enhance traffic flow and fire safety. A double doorway provides easier access to the ground floor, which includes an expanded kids' lunch area that is ready for the resumption of normal Ski School operations. The new third floor foyer will eventually house additional storage cubbies. Behind the scenes are numerous improvements, including new heating, ventilation, fire safety, and electrical systems to address long-deferred needs. The additional stairway and improved ventilation are proving very helpful to modified Covid-19 operations. The retro paint scheme from the early days of MRG is a big hit!

The main floor of the Basebox is now more open thanks to relocating the dishwashing room and reconfiguring the kitchen. Additional cubbies will be added when the Basebox resumes normal capacity.

This new Pub ordering window is going to be a very popular feature, particularly down the road. You can now order drinks right from the cafeteria without having to work your way through the crowd at the bar. The sliding door is made from the lower half of the old first floor entry door.

The old kitchen was a tangle of small spaces broken up by interior partitions. The new kitchen is open and efficient, with new appliances, improved ventilation, and better working conditions for our staff.

Two new family-friendly bathrooms are located on the main floor, adding much-needed additional capacity.

The new elevator provides handicap accessibility, and will greatly improve food and beverage service efficiency. No more lugging kegs up the narrow back stairs!

The new Patrol/Ski School building rests on the same footprint as the old run-down structure it replaced, but adds significantly more usable square footage thanks to the raised roofline. The new structure is energy-efficient and will significantly reduce operational costs.

The main First Aid treatment room is roomy and efficient. A new private treatment room is located just to the right. In typical MRG fashion, the old toboggan access door was reused, providing a link to the past.

Our hard-working and dedicated Patrol members can now gear up in this pleasant and comfortable staff room.

The old cramped and musty Ski School room has been replaced with this spacious gear/meeting room. According to Dave Knoop, Ski School Director, "This is a dream come true, something we never thought would happen. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!"

Construction is nearing completion on the building projects!

It’s been a busy summer at Mad River Glen as construction has moved along at a rapid pace on the Basebox renovations and the rebuild of the Patrol/Ski School building. We expect both projects will be done in time for the upcoming ski season. Here’s a peek at some of the work over the last couple of months.

Construction has started on the building projects!

This past Tuesday, April 28 was a big milestone for the Preserve Our Paradise Campaign, as our two major building projects began in earnest. MRG Mountain Operations Manager Nate Martin used the campaign-funded excavator to reduce the old Ski Patrol Building to rubble in less than an hour, a process that was livestreamed over the MRG Birdcage cam. The old building will be replaced by a completely new structure to house the Patrol and Ski School staff, thanks to your generous donations!

Originally scheduled to begin in early April, the Patrol rebuild and the Basebox renovations were delayed due to the Coronavirus crisis, but the projects were given the go-ahead on April 24. During late March and earl April, both the Patrol Building and the Basebox were emptied out by MRG staff, with equipment and furnishings going into the Cricket Club and a rented storage container. Construction will continue during the summer and fall, with completion slated by the start of the ski season in early December. Due to the construction, General Stark’s pub will not be open this summer.

For more information about the projects, visit the Base Area Projects page on the MRG website. You can still support the buildings by making a donation and helping to reduce the $300-400K that MRG will be borrowing to fully complete the projects.

Thank you to our generous donors for making these essential projects possible!

We’re still accepting donations through the end of the year!

Although the Preserve Our Paradise Campaign has completed active solicitations for new donations, if you missed your chance to give, it’s not too late! We are continuing to accept new donations through the end of the 2019 calendar year. Currently, the Coop is planning to finance approximately $250,000 of the two major building projects that will be completed next year, the Basebox renovations, and the rebuild of the Patrol/Ski School Building. Any donations received will help to reduce the borrowing by the Coop, and will be greatly appreciated!

Donations continue to be fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You can make donations via the online donation page. Thank you for your consideration!

Shareholders vote to authorize building projects

We’re excited to announce that at the recent Green and Gold Town meeting in October, Mad River Glen's shareholders voted overwhelmingly to authorize the two largest building projects that will be funded by the campaign. The projects include the renovations to the historic Basebox, and the rebuild of the Patrol/Ski School building. Per the Coop’s bylaws, the projects required approval by the shareholders, and the measure passed by a resounding 644 votes in favor, 19 opposed.

We’re thrilled with this great vote of confidence! Currently, the Coop’s management and the Facilities Committee are working hard with our architects and construction manager to ensure that these two projects will be completed prior to the 2020-2021 ski season. We look forward to seeing the results of your very generous donations next year!
